Hybrid Trial

Hybrid Bus Launch

In conjunction with Volvo Australia, LVBL will be trialling Victoria’s first Volvo B5RLE Hybrid route bus service. This will be the first instance of the Volvo B5RLEH parallel technology in Victoria, and beginning in the second week of August, the trial will be in service for a minimum of three months.

Cities and regions across the world face many urban challenges, including pollution, congestion, and the use of natural energy resources. Given the Latrobe Valley’s history as Victoria’s main energy provided, the region is no exception to these problems. Combined with Latrobe City’s aim of becoming the engineering capital of Australia, we feel this Hybrid technology is a step in the right direction.

LVBL has a history of progressive actions, supporting the local community and showing environmental consideration. In 2015, the company introduced the first environmentally efficient Volvo Euro 6 route service bus in Victoria, achieved B Corp Certification for displaying verified social and environmental responsibility to the community, and in August this year we introduced two additional Volvo Euro 6 buses to our fleet.

The Volvo B5RLE has proven in commercial operation to be the most fuel efficient and reliable hybrid on the European market. The Volvo parallel system is based on the basic principal that an electric motor works in parallel with a diesel engine to drive the vehicle, and utilises energy otherwise wasted during braking. The hybrid is able to depart bus stops silently with the diesel engine shut off, saving fuel and increasing passenger comfort. To be specific, the bus uses 30 – 40% less fuel than a conventional diesel only bus and in terms of road emissions is capable of operating 40% better.

Latrobe Valley Bus Lines would like to introduce some hybrid bus technology into its fleet of route service buses within the next 5 years. The hybrids will be a further step towards an environmentally friendly fleet.

We look forward to continuing our devotion to the environment and community and hope to see the community get involved. Therefore, we invite you to join us as we celebrate this initiative by attending a public launch of the service on August 31 from 10:00am-12:00pm at Stockland Plaza Traralgon. You will get the opportunity to ride the bus on a short trip around the Traralgon CBD and use the Blender Bike to whip up some green themed smoothies! We hope to see you there.
